Smarter, more efficient recycling can pay for itself

The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) in Washington D.C. is determined this year to remind people that recycling is the one thing almost everyone can do to help slow climate change and preserve the environment for future generations.

The NRC is always searching for smarter, more efficient and more sustainable methods of recycling.  We here at Timothy Communications believe that on-site "recycling coordinators" are going to be pivotal players in this maturing industry.  We're expecting measurably more recycling coordinators to be educated and hired by big business, schools and universities, cities and counties, and event planners for everything from county fairs to music concerts.

As recycling plays a bigger role in conservation, smart recycling coordinators will be finding new ways to maximize returns on their green and clean initiatives.  We think there will come a time when "recycling" shifts from the expense side of the balance sheet into the revenue collected column.

Where might your business fit in?  Well, start with the knowledge that there are four basic steps in the "cycle:"

1) collecting recyclables
2) sorting and processing
3) conversion/manufacturing
4) Selling recycled as new again

The "Cool Globes" lakefront art exhibit in Chicago last year reminded folks that recycling is something everyone can do.

    Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

The three "R's" of environmental protection are reduce, re-use and recycle.   It only stands to reason that if a higher percentage of the six billion people on planet Earth strive to reduce consumption and waste, re-use whatever they can, and recycle everything that is recyclable, we'll operate more efficiently and put less greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

Of the three "R's," most of the heavy lifting falls to recycling, which is where we're focusing so much of our attention in 2008.   Stay tuned for periodic updates.
